Plastic 7

The data I used to create a tangible self portrait are the total amount of disposable plastic products I consumed for seven days a week, by collecting the round lids of the products (often take-out coffee and food). I intended to tell the story of not only myself using plastic, but rather, where plastic comes from, and where it goes after we use it.

I researched for various data sets about the process of plastic production, consumption, and disposal. Seven sets were eventually chosen for each day of my week of using plastic. They include the percentage of oil each year to produce plastic, the various usage of plastic, the amount that’s recycled, etc.

In the visualization process, each plastic lid was used differently to reflect the data, sometimes as a pie chart, other times they represent one unit in time or quantity. I chose the hand-drawn style because I have noticed the unique way it leads attention from the audience.
